It's back to school time and for our family, a first to send our oldest son to "real" school. I wasn't worried about sending Mayu off to school as I knew he would adjust smoothly, but trying to figure out his lunch menu was keeping me up some nights! I was a subsutitute teacher for over 4 years before I got married and was completely mortified by what the kids ate (or didn't eat) and as a result I vowed to myself that my children would never be subjected to the " standard American" diet.
Mayu had a year of pre-school and we held him back for his year of kindergarten, so we always ate lunch together and often times with my parents. Since we are gluten-free and there is yet a gluten-free bread to cross my path that mimics the texture of real bread, our family doesn't do sandwiches. I am O.K. with this as I was happy to make real food daily for us, instead of falling in the "sandwich as a meal" trap. Mayu is used to eating hot lunches and a wide variety of foods ranging from cuban beans, rice and plantains to lamb and sauteed swiss chard. So my challenge was how to replicate the home-cooked meals into his lunch box. Here is how it can be done:

Some of my fondest memories of being with my baby boys was
wearing them. I loved having them close to me, the ease of nursing, the freedom
of being mobile, the ability to see their faces and just the incredible bond I
had with them. With my first, Mayu, I had the wrong carriers: an uncomfortable
Native Carrier in the wrong size and, gasp, a Baby Bjorn! I didn’t know anyone
who was baby wearing, so the resources weren’t there for me. Apart from being
terribly uncomfortable in the Bjorn, I would soon find out how dangerous it was
for my baby.Read more
When my boys were little I protected them like only a mama bear could. I
watched their every move, made sure they were always safe, cleaned their toys
before they put them in their mouths and chased them around feeding them to
make sure they were getting the wholesome nutrition they needed. I didn't want
to be paranoid (although I am sure my husband thought I was), but protective I
was. I imagined as they grew older I would alter my ways to adjust to their
growth, but I never imagined that I would be so, well, easy going with them.
When we were children, my brother and I played in the neighborhood until the
wee hours of the night. Our home was nestled into the hills and all of the
children would play there making sure to watch for rattlesnakes and other biting
creatures. There was a lot of freedom in our play and our parents never gave a
second thought to allow us to dart from house to house, several blocks in
between them. We were older, 3rd grade and up and our parents knew we were
safe. When I was the age of my oldest son, now 6 1/2, I was roaming the desert
of Las Vegas in much the same
manner. My childhood was spent outside, being active and discovering life
through friendships and exploration.Read more
